What is a Working Woodlot?
A working woodlot is one that is managed to produce timber as a primary product.
-
"Actively managed - not just wild, but intentionally cared for.
-
Sustainable Cycle - harvesting and regrowth for continuous benefits.
-
Multiple Outputs - timber, pulp, and increasingly, bio-products, ecosystem
services."

GNB's Private Woodlot Silviculture Program
"The program provides cost-sharing funds to the seven Forest Product Marketing Boards for forest management plans and eligible silviculture treatments on private woodlots. The main objective is to encourage sustainable forest management which improves the amount of higher-value timber supply.
"There should be reasonable expectation that forest management plans and work approved under this program will enhance the volume and/or quality of forest products over at least a 10 year timeframe. Where site or stand conditions, or incidence of disease or insects, or landowner objectives suggest this expectation will not be met, properties are not eligible for this program."

Silviculture is the art and science of controlling the establishment, growth, and composition, health and quality of forests and woodlands.

"The decline of sugar maple, a species valued both ecologically and economically, has become a growing concern in New Brunswick’s hardwood forests. This issue was one of several that prompted early discussions in the 2000s about the need for a regional applied research institute dedicated to hardwoods.
These discussions ultimately led to the creation of NHRI in 2012, under the leadership of the Université de Moncton and with support from key industry, government, and academic partners.
Since its founding, NHRI has focused on regional challenges, including the decline in hardwood supply and the need for more
targeted, science-based forest management practices."
